WHO'S HERE! The Police Box Art Show

ドクメンタ12やミュンスター彫刻プロジェクトの感想などもアップしたいのですが、ひとまず僭越ながら、私が企画に携わったエジンバラでの展覧会情報を載せます。本当は3日間限定の展示だったのですが、より多くの人々に見てもらおうと、急遽今週末(8月17日ー19日）も開催することにしました。お近くに寄った際は、是非足をお運びください。以下、プレスリリースより抜粋です。

WHO'S HERE! THE POLICE BOX ART SHOW

本展では、エジンバラに点在する古い交番（Police Box）を使用し、
３日間限定の小さなギャラリーを開きます。
歴史深いエジンバラの街に今もたたずむ小さな交番は、
その多くが19世紀に設置されました。
その歴史を辿ってみると、イギリス初の交番はスコットランドに建てられ、
当初は警察直通の電話を置いた電話ボックスのような物が主流でした。
その後、警察官が駐留し、今も残る小屋のような形になりました。
おもちゃのように親しみやすい形状をしたこうした交番は、
1963年から放映されているテレビ番組の
『ドクター・フー』（Doctor Who)の中では主人公が乗り込む時空転移マシンとして登場し、
ポップカルチャー的アイコンとしても人々に知られています。

かつては市民の安全を守り、情報を発信する地点として
人々に愛され続けて来た街のシンボルも、
残念ながら現在はその役割を終え、ほとんどが使用されないまま残されています。
本展では、こうした街の建築的遺産を使用し、
新たな情報発信の場やネットワークを構築することを試みます。
参加作家はエジンバラで活動を行う日本、アメリカ、スコットランド、イングランド、
台湾、オーストラリア出身の若手アーティスト16組で、
会期中は約2ｍ×1ｍの交番の内外に様々なインスタレーション、
彫刻、絵画、映像、ドローイングを設置します。
夜には交番をステージに様々なアート／音楽パフォーマンスが行われ、
訪れる人々とアーティストが相互に創造的刺激を与え合う場を提供していきます。
また、エジンバラ市内の交番マップを配布し、地点と地点を結んで行く人々の流れも促します。

本展のタイトルであるWho’s Here!は、
かつての交番の電話での会話を想像させると共に、
本展に訪れた人々が体験する新しい出会い、予期せぬ驚きを表現しています。
街の歴史を紡いで来た交番にアーティストによる創造的息吹を吹き込むことで、
時間の経過と共に見過ごされて来た場所の再活性化、建築の再利用化を試みます。

From Friday 10 August until Sunday 12 August, the historical Police Box opposite Pleasance will be converted to Edinburgh’s smallest gallery, housing artwork and performance by sixteen emerging artists. The gallery will show various mini-size sculpture, painting, drawing, film, jewellery, and food installation by Edinburgh based artists, with several exciting performances and music events inside and outside the gallery space. The art will also be available for purchase.
During these three days, the surface of the police box will be painted in white, featuring numerous collaborative drawings by Yao-Pang Wang and Sam Taylor, and photo installation by Satoko Kiuchi. Visitors are also invited to sit and relax outside the police box during an outdoor performance by Steven Mykietyn, and the music performances by Owen Williams and Ben Danzig Jazz Duo starting at 19:00 daily. We welcome visitors to enjoy different artworks by participating artists, experiencing the smallest gallery in the city, and appreciate the historical aspects of the police box.
The very first public police boxes in UK were introduced in Scotland in 1891. Small iron-made police boxes were often painted in blue, and they functioned as information and networking points for local people and police officers in old days. Its figure is also well known as a Tardis in the famous TV program Doctor Who. Now, there are very few police boxes still existing in the UK, many of those remaining can be found in Edinburgh.
By bringing emerging artists to this important Scottish architectural heritage site, we aim to regenerate the space and reinstate its former purpose as a point for the exchange of information and networks, and give a new function and artistic dimension to a historic structure.
